UIET - PUNJAB UNIVERSITY GET CENTRALLY FUNDED STATUS
University Institute of Engineering & Technology called UIET is the engineering education institute set up in the premises of prestigious Punjab University Chandigarh. Bharti group has set up a Bharti chair in telecommunication & IT in the institute & institute is also a member of campus connect programme of Infosys Technologies. The UIET also has lot of MOUs with industries like IBM, Sun Microsystems etc.
But still it was ranked much below the other prominent institutes of engineering of the region like Thapar University, PEC University & NIT Jalandhar.
But recently it has been made known that Punjab University Chandigarh has been granted the status of centrally funded university, so what does it mean & how will it affect the UIET rank? Punjab University was previously funded by the Punjab Govt & the central govt in the ratio of 40%-60% & was always struggling to meet its expanses. But after getting the centrally funded university status with the active intervention of Prime Minister Sh. Manmohan Singh, all the funding requirements of the Punjab University will be borne by the central Govt which means that the university will be receiving lot of funds of about Rs. 100 crore per year in line with the IITs & NITs. Since the UIET is the engineering department of the PU, some part of the money will also be allotted to it for further improvement in infra & facilities.
So the debate of Thapar v/s UIET or NIT v/s UIET is going to hot up in the coming engineering admission season. But one thing is sure that the institute is certain to move up the ranking ladder in the coming years.
